COMPETENCES OF CHAIR FOR COMMON SUBJECTS

COMPETENCES

The Chair for Common Subjects has 4 staff members (1 Senior lecturer, 1 Full professor, 1 Assistant professor and 1 Lecturer).

The Chair is especially interested in the following research areas/disciplines: development of education system, while the special emphasis is put on knowledge transfer; especially in the field of foreign languages (English for Specific Purposes, Business English, German), Mathematics, etc. The priority is to improve cooperation and integration of education and business sector.

Language Laboratory

The Language Laboratory is used in the education process (undergraduate programme) for the following courses: Foreign Languages (Technical English and Technical German).

APPLICATIONS

Organization of summer schools, language workshops and courses for students and teachers of the Mechanical Engineering Faculty, as well as for the participants from the economy.

Regular organization of the preparatory seminars (Introduction to Mathematics) for high school graduates.

RESULTS OBTAINED

Due to the fact that using English clearly and effectively is becoming essential for future success, these short communication courses (workshops) provide the ideal complement to students’ regular classroom learning. Availability of modern training equipment and updated training curricula enables upgrading of workforce skills and gaining knowledge in ESP, thus improving workforce competitiveness on the labour market. This training of engineers helps improving knowledge transfer through intensive training programmes. This in fact helps to improve the competitiveness of businesses by offering valued services and developing skilled human capital, and in the end by improving local employment.

ACCOMPLISHED INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

In 2010, the Chair organized in cooperation with English in Action Ltd. (Canterbury) a summer school: Business Communication Skills. It was organized for students and professors of Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Slavonski Brod, as well as for the participants from the economy (from various companies).

In 2011, the Chair organized language workshops for the Festival of Science that was held at Mechanical Engineering Faculty in Slavonski Brod.

The Chair also regularly organizes preparatory seminars (Introduction to Mathematics) for high school graduates.

POTENTIAL INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

The Language Laboratory can offer assistance in various aspects of professional development and training in the field of foreign languages (Technical English, Business English, General English; Technical German, etc.) by organizing various language workshops for students and participants from the economy. The principal aim of the workshops (courses) is the improvement of students’ ability to use professional literature. These activities can improve the competitiveness of businesses by offering valued services and developing skilled human capital, by bridging businesses, research and educational organisations, by developing and improving local employment. It can also positively affect the preservation of existing jobs which are at risk due to technological obsoleteness and outdated skills and knowledge.

AVAILABLE INSTRUMENTATION

The equipment of the Laboratory includes the following: PC notebook, OH projector, cassette recorders, printer, projection screen, etc. The Laboratory has a large number of cassettes, CDs and textbooks for English for Specific Purposes for all levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced).
